Wednesday Storms: Three hours without electricity

Published by dfallis at 8:56 am under Humor, Living Edit This

You never truly appreciate what you have until you no longer have it…well, go three hours without electricity because of a huge storm that tore down power lines and toppled trees and you realize how dependent you are upon the power. We-my husband and myself-lit every candle that we could find in the house and still the living room was dark and somewhat foreboding as the clouds clapped loudly with thunder and the only light from outside was a streaking bolt of fiery lightening that splintered the darkness with shrieks, crackles, and pops as loud as a 22 being discharged. However, unlike a lot of Texas storms, not one minute or humongous piece of hail hit the earth. The winds blew, the trees cracked, the banana tree looked like someone tried to braid every leaf, and the skies poured as we sat lifeless in the living room waiting for the lights to return. Technically, the lights went out around 4:55 p.m. and were not fully on until around 9:30 p.m., but we had faint glimmerings, flashes of light really, from time-to-time as each line was repaired and each tree removed.

One particularly loud and logistically close bolt of lightening shook the house like a ragdoll that sent us upright from our dreary discussion about the length of time it was taking for the electricity to come back on. Strange how the only thing that seems speak-able during an outage is the amount of time it takes for the illumination of life to return. We probably counted every five minutes as one more sector of life without the television, or the Wii game system, which we have become “far-too” dependent upon.

The cat, well…he rather liked the lack of light outside, he just did not feel too cozy with the thunder. He sat on the arm of my husband’s chair staring out the front door in awe of the light show and the wind. Ordinarily, during a period of such length, the cat would have been to his food bowl 5 times; however, Wednesday night was the exception…he made not one trip until the lights returned. We, on the other hand, ate sandwiches in the dark. We’re only relatively sure that they were smoked turkey, provolone, and tomato sandwich, as I made them in the dark.
